Issues
Political advice:  Ever since I first ran in 2004, I have frequently gone to Congressman Harry Mitchell for advice and guidance. Congressman Mitchell has been an amazing influence and role model for me; his example has demonstrated the importance of serving the community I represent.
Top issues:  The most pressing issue that I have been focusing on as a State Representative is to fully fund and equip our K-12 education system. Students should have the best resources, teachers and facilities. The other most pressing issue that I have worked on is the sustainability and conservation of vital natural resources in our environment.
Program to cut:  If I had to cut a state program, I would definitely cut the Corporate Tuition Tax Credit state program, which aids private schools and diverts public funds away from our already financially depleted public school system.
Program to expand:  I would devote more funding to our children and students in the K-20 education system. Schools across Arizona are faced with unsafe buildings, underpaid teachers and a lack of resources. I would fully invest in every level of education in this state to bring Arizona to the top of national rankings in all educational areas.
Biggest problem:  I believe the biggest issue threatening Arizona's future is the lack of water to our growing population. I have already proposed legislation to address this issue and have worked closely with stakeholders.
Fiscal philosophy:  I am a strong fiscal conservative. I believe in zero-based budgeting as well as wise investments to Arizona's economy.
Position on immigration laws:  I believe the state was held hostage by Rep. Russell Pearce and his threat of a initiative. Because of this, Arizona has inept, harmful and pointless state immigration policies in place. Instead, this state needs to work with the business community and the federal government to address immigration issues.
K-12 education:  To improve our K-12 education system, I would lower classroom sizes, give children safe and accessible buildings and increase their resources for learning in the classroom. I would also increase our teacher's pay; they should be paid the value that they are worth to our community.
Economic development:  I am a strong supporter of the SPEED program, which uses our state universities to create new jobs, new industries and stimulate our economy. I also believe in recruiting the nation's top companies to have their headquarters in Arizona and provide more jobs to Arizonans.
Environmental regulation:  I believe the Legislature should do all we can to protect our already depleted natural resources, as well as look into innovative ways to encourage and maintain sustainability.
Bonding to balance the budget:  I believe that just like the common homeowner, borrowing at a low interest rate is a wise and smart investment. I do favor having the state bond to build new schools for our children.
Abortion:  I believe abortions should be rare, safe and legal.
One last thing:  I work as a mental health counselor in two metro Phoenix school districts. The children I work with have experienced horrors that I can't even fathom. These children are the true influence on me and my legislation, as I hope to make their lives a little bit brighter and easier than what they are going through currently.
